Abstract

In this work, a deep neural network model for ordinal classification problems basedon the use of a probabilistic ordinal model in the output layer is proposed. Thismodel is commonly known as Proportional Odds Model (POM) and is a statisticallinear models which projects the input data into a 1-dimensional space. In ourcase, the 1-D projection is obtained a non-linear deep neural network. After that,each sample is classified using a set of ordered thresholds that split the outputspace. With the end of further improving the results, the POM is combined with aloss function which is based on the Kappa index and takes the distance betweenclasses into account. The proposed method is applied to an ordinal problem relatedto diabetic retinopathies detection, and the results confirmed that the proposedapproach outperforms the nominal alternative.
